WINKLER, MB – The Winkler Police Service is actively investigating a scam incident that occurred on January 19, 2024, where a local man fell victim to a fraudulent scheme, ultimately providing several thousand dollars to a suspect.
The victim received a phone call from an individual claiming to be his granddaughter. The caller informed the victim that she was in police custody, alleging involvement in a vehicular incident with a pedestrian and urgently needing money for bail. Subsequently, the victim was contacted by individuals posing as court officials, seemingly validating the initial caller’s narrative.
Convinced of his granddaughter’s predicament, the victim cooperated with the suspects and agreed to provide financial assistance. A female suspect then attended the victim’s residence in Winkler, where the victim handed over several thousand dollars. It was only after the transaction that the victim became suspicious and reached out to his granddaughter, learning that she had not been arrested and did not require any financial help. The realization confirmed that he had fallen victim to a scam.

- Wearing a dark coat and a scarf covering her face.
Police have obtained partial surveillance camera footage of the female suspect and are seeking assistance from the community.
