Columbus, MS – The Columbus Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect who stole an 88-year-old woman’s purse at Food Giant Supermarket in East Columbus. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 6, 2024, just after 9:00 a.m., when the elderly shopper stole her purse from her shopping cart.
According to Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry, Sr., the suspect approached the victim, grabbed her purse, and quickly fled the scene. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident, and the empty purse was later discovered nearby.
Chief Daughtry is urging the community to come forward with any information that may lead to the identification of the suspect. A clear still shot of the suspect has been provided, and authorities believe someone may recognize him.
“Somebody knows who this is, and I am asking for anonymous help to identify him,” Chief Daughtry emphasized. “We are checking cameras of businesses in the area, but this is a good still shot of him, and someone knows him.”

Food Giant Supermarket is in the Gateway Shopping Center on Alabama Street, just behind Hardee’s restaurant. Chief Daughtry is urging the community to come together and assist in making an arrest, ensuring that those responsible for preying on vulnerable individuals are held accountable for their actions.
